Black River NC

Lowlands of the Black River near Wilmington North Carolina preserve some of the oldest living trees in Eastern North America. These swamps are dominated by mixed hardwoods and ancient bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), the oldest organisms known to live in any wetland worldwide. We are participants in research with the Ancient Bald Cypress Consoritum, which " unites educational institutions, government agencies, conservation organizations, private landowners, and individuals to accurately map and protect all remaining ancient bald cypress wetlands for research, education, and conservation."
